Wood Architecture | Lecture by Hermann Kaufmann
Kyoto University Architecture | Lecture Series 2025
Vortrag | LectureHermann Kaufmann was born in 1955 in Reuthe in the Bregenzerwald region. As the son of a long-established carpenter family, helping out in his parents’ business was a given. In the workshops and on the construction site, he learned about the possibilities and applications of wood as a building material and developed a craftbased approach that would significantly shape his work as an architect. His approach as an architect is shaped by the ideas of classical modernism within the framework of a profound engagement with the built context. Central themes in his work are exploring the possibilities of modern timber construction and the search for comprehensive answers in the field of sustainable construction.

Twenty-six selected projects demonstrate the innovative energy and cultural aspirations of contemporary timber architecture from Austria.
