The house for children is made of wood and shows full-scale integration into the village structure. Carefully handcrafted details and the impressive movement area upstairs are obvious qualities which are complemented by ecological and energy efficient features.

A modern building concept for architecture, art, gastronomy and a bookshop as well as unobtrusively attached apartments preserve the memory of the "Alte Naturschau” even after the renovation.

A new inner-city district was created with the redesign of the centre of Dornbirn around the City Hall and the residential and office buildings of the former Ulm-area. This high-density district responds with individual cubes to the villas of the neighborhood, the cemetery and the Mohren-Brewery. The high-rise will be rebuilt and extended by seven condominiums.

The multipurpose building with a panoramic view is built on the site of the fire station. The old building forms the torso of the new building. The cube’s exterior wall of the rooms along the street is kept simple.

For the construction of the school in Wolfurt which complies with passive energy standards only environmental friendly materials were used. The open ground plan concept which allows multifunctional playability meets the requirements of modern school life optimally.

The Moorrom hovers over the area on six steel pillars. The building that is reduced to the essentials does not even have electricity, provides shelter, the opportunity to rest but also a location for lectures.

The four-storey solitary building made of timber and complying with passive energy standards unites the community center, the town hall, the kindergarten and the village shop on the steep southern slope in the Great Walser Valley.

The lofty tower with a steel staircase contrasts the compact low-rise building. The development areas are minimised by an ingenious arrangement of the various functional areas. It took some effort to adapt the in-situ concrete structure to passive energy standards.

The traditional inn has transformed into a simple, modern hotel without borrowing the clichés of rustic and alpine tourist facilities.

Although the community center in the style of the 70s is rather inconspicuous from the outside, the interior is worth to be seen. The colored glass walls that divide the offices on both storeys represent a remarkable art project.

The refurbishment, the reconstruction, the landscape modification and the extension make the intentions of the innovative and exemplary attempt to school building construction from the 60s recognizable. The highlight is the view from the gym.

A long story of disputes was put to a happy end. The outstanding and even exemplary result was achieved by the construction of a Kindergarten, a cafe, a civic hall and food market.

Veranstaltungssaal und Kindergarten in Dornbirn

Durch Erweiterungen der Wifi-Bestandsgebäude wurde eine neue städtische Struktur zwischen Bahnhof und Zentrum geschaffen. Das Grundstück wird durch zwei geknickte, sichelförmige Baukörper als Quartier definiert.

The unusual meeting place in the newly developed marina Fußachs plays with the elements light, nature and water. It is a clear cube with a moving concrete structure and crystalline texture on a glass cladding.

The western wing of the LKH Feldkirch is terminated by the extension in black cladding which can only be observed from outside. The layering of the materials and the function remain hidden on the inside.

The hairdresser and beauty saloon is located centrally on the 1st and 2nd floor of the shopping center. Surprisingly it turns out to be a relaxing area. The internal wooden staircase connects the two areas. The pea green color scheme and the corporate design were created by artist Roland Stecher.

In the center of Dornbirn the old Ölz manufactury has been transformed into a low-energy residential building. Some rooms of the 14 loft apartments that revitalize the existing structure are as high as 3.5 meters.

Two units for assisted living communities are arranged in a clear form on two storeys with a special color scheme, providing a high quality of living and integrating well into the residential area. The terrace of the wooden construction opens up into the garden and the glazing from the top to the floor allows an unobstructed view even in a lying position.

The Kaiserstrasse presents itself as a kind of "living room” for pedestrians where they can stop for a snack. You enter from the pedestrian area and exit at Leutbühel. It was deliberately created and designed with the needs of the customers in mind.

The tourist information that also serves as a bus stop is a prominent landmark on the wayside and also invites to take a break. The alpine building interprets the concept of a roof, a bench and a closet in a range spanning from idiosyncratic to funny.

A locksmith’s shop attracts attention with a new idea. The garage doors in the showroom can be set into operation from the outside around the clock. During the night it is the illuminated highlight on the road from Lustenau to Dornbirn.

The small shop with an elegant tasting room combines a Montafon house with the passion for fine spirits. The distillery and the workshop on the ground floor evoke the image of a small working machine.

Die seit den 1970er Jahren an gleicher Stelle bestehende Grillstube wurde vom Hochwasser im Sommer 2005 schwer beschädigt und musste in Folge abgebrochen werden. Über der neuen Hochwasserverbauung aus groben Bruchsteinen entstand ein ruhiger Baukörper mit filigraner Täfelung. Ein zehn Meter langes Sitzfenster bietet Aussicht auf Dorf und Flusslandschaft.

The eponymous animal once grazed on this spot. Today this place at the Arlberg is occupied by a space saver which is functional and playful in details.

The refurbishment illuminated the church, and it was refurnished. The pews made of solid oak planks are clustered in the nave and open space is created at its sides. Narrow light slits were milled into the outer walls below the arched windows.

The chapel is located on the crest of the Vordere Niedere Alpe. Two trails lead to the wooden sacral building. Light is only admitted into the interior through a gap which detaches the altar wall from the building.

The outdated council house has been upgraded with the help of glass, aluminium and a friendly color concept. Clearances, staircases and outdoor units have been redesigned. The houses comply with passive energy standards because the winter gardens serve as thermal buffers.

A development plan with a density that can normally only be achieved by terraced houses was created for the five EFM houses. Although sharing the same form at the exterior, they are completely adapted to the different needs of the individual residents. The energy balance is optimal.

The distillation of fruit brandies is an art form. A modern building component that is attached to the down-to-earth Montafonerhaus with a ribbon of glass provides the prerequisites.

A far-traveled prototype for prefabricated housing has developed into a place for the promotion of architecture. It was disassembled in a vacant lot next to MoMA in Manhattan within one day and later erected in the "inatura” park after shipping overseas.conne

After the extension the name of the building is justified; the generations are combined deliberately. Additionally to the canopy that makes the building easily recognizable, a noteworthy landscape architecture project and various harmonious photographic art works can be discovered.

Under the arcades of the pedestrian zone in Feldkirch the focus is shifted to glasses at the shop of the optician Nasahl. The spotlight is turned to the great depth of the room; the teak formwork unites the floor and the walls. The bistro atmosphere allows taking one’s time with the choice and keeping the overview.

In the Reichshofstadion Lustenau a gem enriches the sports venue. The mobile, translucent chapel that can be unfolded invites to contemplation.

The revitalisation of the Krone is finished with the new Thalsaal. Old and new are considerably noticeable. This project enriches the local community beyond its architectural scope.

The building marks the beginning of a large residential development along the river Ill. As a counterpart to the old spinning mill, the seven-storey residential building with a supermarket on the ground floor rises wrapped in black natural slate. The prerequisites for the future extension have already been created.

In the center of Dornbirn the glass facade of the extension suggests something special behind. A spacious atrium opens up to twenty-one apartments as a semi-public zone.

Im Zentrum von Schruns, vorne schön alt, hinten ganz neu

The arcade for urn graves has been created in the course of the extension of the cemetery as a connection to the whole facility. The level transitions are now terraced and the view and the spatial relationship to the surrounding buildings have been reinforced by the new church square.

Exposed concrete was used for the sharp-edged structure of the mortuary chapel, accompanied by a simple interior made entirely of rough-sawn fir.The extension covers the urn wall and the necessary infrastructure of the cemetery.

The options for development concerning life, living and working that are provided by a 50 square metres large unit are flexible and allow the improvement of spatial quality. New approaches to housing are presented by the interplay of environment, external areas and privacy of the 14 unit complex.

The Schwarzenberger Heimatmuseum (museum of local history) and the exhibition hall for the artist Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1897) are connected by a shared foyer. The character of the original peasant Althaus (1556) has been preserved and adapted to the contemporary demands of a museum.

The traditional inn makes use of the strengths, qualities and resources of the region. Conventionally produced food and beverages that are supplied by the tradesmen and the suppliers of the Bregenzerwald are used consistently.

Not only the shoes are tailor-made at the orthopaedic shoemaker. The overall atmosphere fits into the vault of the old town with the set back shelves and the accentuated seats. The runways and ramps offer suitable shoes for everyone.

The shopping paradise for handymen is perfectly located. The imposing size is perceived on the conveyor belt at the glass facade; the structure of the shelf canyons can still be recognized in the bright halls despite of the storage utilization.

The Raiffeisen Bank in the attractive town center of Schruns is neighboured by the church and the municipal office and directly connects to the second row. The building parts are united under one roof after the renovation and the new construction.

Red fair-faced concrete and galvanized steel profiles give the fire station a rather robust than bulky appearance. The hose tower at the front is easily visible from the distance, and the other part of the building is organized by function: the ground floor is the operation area while the offices and the training area are located on the first floor.

A new building, which retained the existing cold stores, was built the location of the old Schnaps distillery. It combines several facilities under one roof: a distillery, a retail space, a tasting room, a liquor warehouse, a machinery hall and a workshop

The construction of the community center closes the existing ensemble of the church, the school house and the inn from the valley. It was built according to passive energy standards; only wood from the biosphere reservation Großes Walsertal was used.

The community hall Sulzberg was newly built at the old location. The height difference was used to create two main levels. The prominent entrance to the town hall is accessed via the stairs. On the ground-level the bars can be entered directly from the village road. The building features a remarkable surround-sound installation by Roland Stecher.

Schimmernd am Ortseingang von Bizau

The main premises of the textile company F.M. Hämmerle shine with a new gleam. Two-storey apartments, lofts, practices, offices and commercial establishments have revitalized this central area. The careful renovation of the neoclassical building was complemented by the addition of new parts in copper skin.

The first stage of the expansion and transformation of the construction that had been built in 1979 was conducted in 1992 and it was finally finished in 2006. The two huge rod-shaped building elements divide the complex into a studio and workshop stage, a large hall and a stage at the lakeside. The generous urban square in front conveys international flair not only at times of festivals.

The seven single-family, terraced houses in compact wooden construction are only connected underground. The staggered positioning of the units optimizes the illumination and provides each unit with a private and secluded garden.

The positioning of the four organically shaped buildings with a total of 76 apartments arises from the interplay of the topography, the incidence of light and the geometry. The parts of the complex are playfully arranged like waves and thus a shadow-free position to each other is guaranteed.

The small barn has developed into a functional event centre Possible utilisations of the building are cultural events, conferences, symposia or the hosting of the "artists in residence”. The contrast between "the rough” and "the fine” are realised brilliantly.

An entirely harmonious business concept combining an organic restaurant, an organic shop and meeting facilities has raised a venerable but dilapidated country inn from its slumber.

The swank and modern sport hotel is situated directly at the lower terminus of the Steffisalp-Cableway. After an extension, it now offers 56 rooms and a wellness oasis.

The building complex interferes only minimally with the topography of the town and imitates the scale of the adjacent single-family development. The project includes 66 units and those for the assisted living communities were completed during the third construction phase.

The fire station right in the centre of Weiler combines features of the landmark "Ritterhaus” and a barn. Harmonious integration into the village center was achieved by careful restoration and an exciting juxtaposition of old and new.

The reconstruction of the old hall in the industrial area of Wolfurt sets new standards by consistently following the mission statement and making an example at the same time. The cladding of black glazed cement fiber boards was adapted to Passivhaus standard. Prominent are the company logo which is visible from the distance and the generous window hinges on the long sides of the building.

The community center Ludesch is an example from the textbook for dedicated sustainable construction by using only local timber, renewable raw materials and strictly non-toxic materials based on the approach of regional value enhancement.

The compact design of the fire and mountain rescue station is made almost entirely of spruce. Only the garage area had to be integrated into the building as a concrete box due to fire-protection and functional requirements.

The privileged location directly on Lake Constance and right in the center of Bregenz determines the orientation of the buildings. The whole complex consists of three buildings offering a total of 54 apartments. The apartments that are set on a base can be reached by porches whereas the apartments facing west have loggias.

Despite of the hose tower, the vehicle depot and command center on the ground floor, the building is not only used "monoculturally”. The cantilevered top floor made of wood accommodates the training rooms and the crew area of the mountain rescue team, which can be accessed via a separate staircase.

The popular public bath from the 60's has been renovated and extended by a wellness area. The impression of concurrently swimming in the park and in the city is conveyed by the spatial design and the deliberate choice of material.

The premises of the wood retailer represent one of the largest warehouses constructed of wood in Central Europe. Impressive room dimensions, maximum operational flexibility and excellent adaptation to the topography characterize the building. The construction materials are part of the company’s product range.

The three-storey condominium is designed for lofts which facilitates a densification between the industrial district and the residential area with detached single-family houses.

Bewusst wurde bei dem Projekt eine dichtere Bebauung als in der Nachbarschaft üblich gewählt. Die zweigeschossige Wohnanlage wurde als Versuchsfeld für eine kostengünstige ökologische Bauweise mit Niedrigenergiestandard gesehen. Die Wohnungen werden über halböffentliche Eingangsloggien, als schwellenlose Übergange vom öffentlichen in den privaten Bereich, betreten.

The strengths of the corner house located in the traffic-reduced center of Bregenz are the outdoor areas and the great quality of living. It features a facade of glass and aluminium, a spacious entrance hall, offices on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors.

The new administration wing is impressively supported by eight meter high steel columns. Have a look inside as well and enjoy the stylish cafe and comfortable waiting areas. Ongoing modifications have changed the units which are now characterized by distinct colored accents.

The community center was awarded the Bauherrenpreis in 2004 and unites the elementary school, the municipal administration office, an inn and the village shop under one roof. The design of the solid wood construction met with wide approval among citizens and decision-makers who were integrated in the process from the beginning.

The angular exterior made of gray gravel concrete contrasts with the warm wooden interior construction. A lateral access zone with a wardrobe, a library and a bar confines the newly created village square. The actual height of the new building is only visible from the valley below.

The same handwriting can be recognized in all new buildings – the kindergarten, the café and the grocery store. The location and the created clearances form the exemplary village center of Langenegg fulfilling the highest claim for ecological and energy minimization.

The old building was renovated and reconstructed and is now a place for art. A convention hall is located upstairs and a small agricultural museum of local history is situated at the ground floor. An exciting contrast is created by the visible old constructions and new installations.

The feel-good-atmosphere is conveyed by the materials – reinforced concrete and wood – as well as by the properties – clarity and transparency – in a modern architectural language. Further contributions to the village life and its locations are the rooms for two groups of kindergarten children on the ground floor and a music rehearsal room on the first floor.

After repeated reconstructions and extensions the former farm building at the Seestrasse in Hard now houses an inn with a basement bar, a convention hall in the attic and several guest rooms.

Detailgenau und geplant, bis zur Terrassenbepflanzung

The best possible view of the hustle and bustle in the pedestrian zone of the city can be enjoyed with coffee and much more in the fancy espresso and wine bar which is located at the corner between Schmiedgasse and the marketplace.

Mit dem Umbau dieses innerstädtischen Verkehrsknotens (2001-2003) sollte zugleich ein urbaner Treffpunkt entstehen. Das dreigeschoßige Gebäude sorgt mit vielfältig bespielten Arkadenlokalen für Verschränkung mit dem Stadtraum. Die Textur des Busplatzes verbindet mit dem Sparkassenplatz und trägt so zum homogenen Gesamtbild bei.

The school building is an entirely wooden construction complying with passive energy standards. A two-storey cross bar accommodating the library and the auditorium forms an acoustic barrier to protect the classrooms and the green schoolyard from the street.

An urban atmosphere can be enjoyed in the bar, in the lounge or in the restaurant at the business centre "Element” which has the largest conservatory of Vorarlberg.

The striking exposed masonry made of rough brick gives the condominium in Oberndorf a Dutch atmosphere. The ceiling-high wooden windows, the loggias, the balconies and the terraces ensure a smooth transition to the outer area.

Conservation and renewal are equally important at the Juppenwerkstatt. A Bregenzerwälder traditional gown for women, the "Juppe”, is featured by the museum. Dye-works, a finishing shop and a room for smoothing and pleating are accommodated in the former barn and hayrick. The wooden shingles of the façade have been extensively replaced by glass shingles.

The former machine factory has turned into an interactive exhibition of nature. The museum is situated within the idyllic city park that has been designed by landscape architects. A visit of the current exhibition of kunstraum Dornbirn located in the opposite factory hall is recommended.

The cultural centre and office building Schoppernau unites a bank, a tourism office, a hairstylist, a local ensemble, a library and a museum. Untreated silver fir, continuous asphalt floor and ceiling high glazing are the attributes of the new building which blends in perfectly with the existing village structure.

The elliptical bathhouse with its comfy, well organised sauna and wellness area is worth a relaxing visit. The new lobby, the restaurant expansion and the bedroom wing should not be missed too.

The primary school is integrated into the village structure; it is located on a steeply sloping ground surrounded by the church, the rectory and the town hall. The five-storey building is shaped like a cube with a structure of exposed concrete; in contrast, untreated beech tree is used for the interior constructions.

Der sachliche Sichtbetonbau des Käsekellers bekommt mit den Fassadenlöchern eine augenzwinkernde Referenz auf das Produkt, um das es hier geht. Im Innern bietet eine Glasscheibe zwischen Besuchs- und Produktionsraum freie Sicht auf den Reifungsprozess des Käses.

The addition of storeys and the extension made of wooden elements are integrated into the complex school building without any visible break. This extensive education center not only provides adequate room for about 1,000 pupils with the new large development area.

The small extension with the sports hall and the kindergarten appears to be reserved and small. The requirement to leave the stock from the 50s unchanged and the illumination of the classrooms were prioritized. Thus, the gym is embedded and the wooden box that houses the kindergarten is superimposed within distance.

Culinary as well as tasteful spatial qualities have become apparent after the reconstruction. The entrance – a glass container used to present wines – surprises; differentiated open areas such as the terrace, the lawn, the gravel yard and the light-filled dining rooms offer an exclusive feel-good atmosphere.

Die Gebäude mit den einzelnen Funktionen wie Hochregallager und Transformator wirken skulptural in der von den Landschaftsarchitekten Rotzler Krebs gestalteten Umgebung. In der Nacht lässt die hinterleuchtete Fassade das Gebäude hell-transparent wirken und relativiert somit die Schwere des profanen Zweckbaus.

The showroom and sales room with its three glazed sides is staged as a light fixture. Thus, the outward appearance of the portable cube represents its function as an object.

A maximum of quality of living can be enjoyed in the terraced house that was realized with a small budget and is made of one hundred percent wood. The compactness of the building, the wood element construction and orientation to the southeast prove its passive house qualities.

Beton, Stahl und Glas bestimmen das Bild der Montfortwerbeagentur, der Raum entwickelt sich rampenförmig nach oben, wo Großraumbüro sowie Besprechungsräume angeordnet sind.

Forschung, Produktion und Verwaltung finden im S.I.E Gebäude im Milleniumpark Lustenau gleichsam Platz. Die flachen Hierarchien spiegeln sich im Entwurf. Das Gebäude wurde mit dem Österreichischen Staatspreis für Architektur 2003 ausgezeichnet.

The cleverly constructed viewing slots characterizing the rehearsal studio of the local music club Zwischenwasser provide a visual link to the outside and at the same time guarantee seclusion for concentrated rehearsals. It represents a "walk-in instrument" which was awarded the Vorarlberg Holzbaupreis in 2004.

Der futuristische Baukörper in silberfarbener Fiberglashaut mit leuchtenden Rot- und Orangeakzenten erinnert an ein Flugobjekt. Terminal V dockt an den Bürotrakt des Wohnbauträgers an, potenziellen Wohnungskäufern wird im Inneren die zukünftige Wohnwelt visualisiert.

The solitary building made of clay is opened by a heavy oak door. Light passes through narrow slits into the funeral parlour, which completely dispenses with decorative accessory.

The raw-edged white fir barks on the outside already hint at the inner workings. 'Rustic' is newly interpreted and defined by meticulous details. There are countless inspirations for the guests such as the door and window locks, the faucets and the soap dispensers.

The "Walserhaus" is managed by the fourth generation and combines very old building structures and elements from the 60s with the new extension. Ayurveda, the expanded restaurant, the whole food shop, the seminar room and the lobby are formally reduced and assembled with natural materials.

After several periods of growth, the Krone now offers 60 rooms. Between 1998 and 2002 the hotel underwent an expansion that was facilitated quickly by using exclusively pre-assembled guest modules.The façade of the building is formed by transparent vertical blinds and the inside is characterised by the charm of rough sawn wood.

The concept of a market is clearly recognizable in the high hall in timber construction style. The daily shopping is done with a "friendly” casualness caused by the open atmosphere and it may be perceived as a relaxing activity.

Despite of the same concept, the valley and the mountain station evoke different experiences. The all-over glazed steel halls and an art-in-building project that plays with color and sunshine characterize the Kriegerhornbahn.

The clearly structured building attracts not only people with a toothache. Three artists left their mark. The attractions are an oversized photograph, an abstract set of teeth featured in front of a pink concrete wall and pink tulips in the form of a row of teeth as a counterpart.

The extension of the existing building increases the quality of living for people with disabilities. The structure presents itself as clear and functional, with a smooth transition between the exterior and the covered seating areas.

The lower "drawer” seems to be "pulled out” of the three-storey box and surrounds the sheltered courtyard. While the upper floors are occupied by the care facilities, the ground floor area is dedicated to public life.

The landmark protected farmhouse has been carefully renovated and the store at the ground floor is now dedicated to wine. The stable next door has been rebuilt from the basement walls and now houses a tax accountancy office.

The fire station in Hohenems presents itself as a visual oasis of calm. The tower is a striking landmark for urban building development. At the side a staircase provides external access to the training and office area on the first floor.

The extension and the addition of another storey have created a revised situation of urban development. The heterogeneous structure of the existing buildings is harmonized, the surrounding squares are completely reorganized and the new construction virtually forms the stretched backbone of the entire complex.

Up to the roof terrace the interplay between interior and exterior as well as open and covered areas of the integrated multi-purpose hall is expertly presented by the placement of the structure and the pergola.

The design of the park was inspired by English gardens and the grand villa has developed into an exhibition and event location. The architectural-historical processes remain noticeable and the historical substance is enriched by functional fixtures.

The residential and commercial building is literally "fitted into” the old town of Feldkirch. Because only its facade is visible in the narrow lane, it can only be "experienced”.

A typical Rheintalhaus was rescued by the architect, and proved perfect for the planned use after a closer investigation. The rooms are part of the accommodation wing, and the workshop area is newly built and completed with the necessary infrastructure.

The transparent workshop provides an insight into the production of the carpentry factory in Feldkirch. An accentuated square is formed by the office building complying with passive energy standards and the distinctive silo which also serves as a display for the logo.

The private hospital for small animals is perfectly organized for functional medical processes in several cubes that vary in height development, size, orientation and color.

The block-like fire station with the hose tower gets three-dimensional depth by the slant of the deep gates. A light ditch provides the crew’s quarters with natural light. The angular arrangement of the parking spaces in the garage allows easy entry and exit.

The driveway and the garage of the fire station are on the lower level and are made of concrete and steel. The access to the Culture Center – an entirely wooden construction – is on the upper floor where the event hall, the rehearsal rooms and the exhibition space of the Women's Museum are located.

The maintenance depot of the community of Hohenems surprises with a remarkable roof construction: The drooping, unconventional wooden truss-shell made of laminated veneer panels was prefabricated in the factory hall and shaped on-the-spot.

Culture is represented in the modern construction of wooden elements and the integrated fire brigade is technically reflected in concrete, steel and glass. The different definitions of the front and backside of the building increase this polarization.

The print shop is supported by concrete piles because of its special location; it is situated one meter below the groundwater level. The imposing printing presses demand a challenging spatial planning and room climate.

The wise use of the topography of the exposed building site and the clear functional organization of the two-storey building into a massive base and a cantilevered lightweight construction on top of it contribute to a large extent to the integration into the spatial structure of the village.
